Walgreens and the Howard University College of Pharmacy are united in their commitment to train future champions in the community pharmacy arena. Participation in this residency program will encourage the resident’s creativity and enhance practice skills as they find ways to address unique healthcare challenges in the community pharmacy setting. The residency is based at the Walgreens health-system pharmacy located at Howard University Hospital. This pharmacy offers clinical pharmacy services for patients with complex disease states including HIV/AIDS, oncology, and transplant. The community pharmacists at this site work closely with medical staff to provide optimal drug therapy for all patients.

This residency program provides a postgraduate training to prepare pharmacists for management and leadership for Walgreens specialty stores. This program seeks to develop a pharmacist that will be able to partner with any hospital system to provide essential transitional care services. This program will also produce a well-rounded professional who will have business acumen, a heightened awareness of regulatory issues affecting pharmacy practice, and experience in providing practical pharmacy education for students.

Resident Activities:
-Disease state management programs in hematology, HIV/AIDS, oncology, transplant, and more
-Support transitions of care for hospital discharge patients through bedside medication delivery and counseling
-Community pharmacy multi-unit management and business operations
-Design and conduct a practice-based research project
-Delivering presentations at regional and national professional meetings
-Executing marketing strategy for the promotion of patient care services
-Participating in a teaching certificate program
-Facilitation of lab lectures and simulation for pharmacy students
-Design and implementation of clinical services


Basic Qualifications
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a college or school of pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education
  • Ability to obtain pharmacist license within the state of residency within the licensure requirement deadline
  • Submission of residency application materials to Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS)
  • Individuals must participate in and adhere to the rules of the ASHP Resident Matching Program.
  • Certified Immunizer or willing to become an immunizer within 90 days of hire.
