The Walgreens PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program in Atlanta GA provides postgraduate training that enables residents to achieve their professional goals, become a leader within the profession, provide compassionate care for members of their communities and contribute to the Walgreen Company’s advancement in healthcare.

The residency program is based at the Walgreens health-system pharmacy located at Piedmont Hospital-Atlanta. This pharmacy location offers clinical pharmacy services for patients who are prescribed in complex therapies such as HIV/AIDS, oncology, chronic inflammatory disease, and transplant. The clinical pharmacists at this site work closely with medical staff to provide optimal drug therapy for patients. The residency program graduates will be leaders in the future of pharmacy and will have an active role in advancing community pharmacy practice.

Resident Activities:
-Develop skills needed in Walgreens health system pharmacy relationships and specialty pharmacy
-Transitions of care and disease state management programs in areas such as HIV/AIDS, oncology, chronic inflammatory conditons, transplant, and hepatitis B, and hepatitis C
-Clinical management of specialty patients that includes; financial assistance, thorough disease-specific clinical counseling, and close communication with providers for optimal patient management
-Impact patient outcomes through participation in patient counseling, medication therapy management, patient adherence, and immunization services.
-Assist with transitions of care through bedside delivery of medications upon discharge
-Develop skills to become an efficient clinical staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager and store manager
-Meet with regional leadership to learn about management initiatives and issues that can affect the implementation of patient care services in the community pharmacy setting.
-Develop and conduct a practice-based research project and present findings at regional and national professional meetings
-Design and execute a minor project (collaborative practice or business plan) and quality improvement projects
-Instruct and precept IPPE and APPE student pharmacists
-Complete a Teaching Certificate Program
-Participate in the Atlanta Area Resident Journal Club

Basic Qualifications
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a college or school of pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education
  • Ability to obtain pharmacist license within the state of residency within the licensure requirement deadline
  • Submission of residency application materials to Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS)
  • Individuals must participate in and adhere to the rules of the ASHP Resident Matching Program.
  • Certified Immunizer or willing to become an immunizer within 90 days of hire.
