The Senior Counsel is a senior legal leader responsible for a key legal function, managing legal risk, and providing strategic legal guidance to executive leadership.
Job Responsibilities
- Functions as the senior legal leader and primary point of contact on all legal matters within a legal specialty and is accountable for delivering accurate, timely and comprehensive legal advice to the business they serve
- Provides advice and counsel to the top division executives and the most senior executives of the assigned division or business unit on a broad range of legal issues and to ensure consistency of approach and philosophy, including but not limited to material legal and business matters impacting or potentially impacting the division. Engages business leaders and their teams in public policy, strategy development and execution
- Collaborates with the business units that it serves to achieve corporate objectives and mitigate unnecessary business risk
- Develops and advises on policies and best practices for the organization
- Provides training to business teams on legal risk and compliance
- Completes complex tasks with limited to no direct oversight
- Reviews and prepares legal documents prior to presentation to management for execution to ensure accurate expression of the legal content
- Receives specific direction from management or more senior law professionals as to the outcomes, process and schedules expected
- Maintains currency and fluency in the legal and business trends that could impact those business units within Walgreens that it serves
- Researches legal principles and precedents, engages and manages outside counsel, drafts legal documents, gathers relevant case related information using multiple sources and methods
- Provides work guidance to other attorneys, paralegals and support staff in developing solutions to problems presented

Basic Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and at least six (6) years of post-bar attorney legal work experience in a combination of law firm and corporate settings
- Required licensure to practice law in at least one state
- Required Illinois bar membership or active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Experience using time management skills such as prioritizing/organizing and tracking details and meeting deadlines of multiple projects with varying completion dates.
- Experience developing and executing legal strategies that align with departmental objectives
- At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
- At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
- Willing to travel up to/at least 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).
