PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program, Grand Rapids, MI

Postgraduate year one (PGY1) residency programs build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas,
goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient
care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

This residency program aims to develop advanced community pharmacists who will provide direct patient care to a variety of patient populations, collaborate with other healthcare professions to optimize patient outcomes, and incorporate
patient care activities into daily workflow of a community pharmacy. This residency is based out of Walgreen’s Medication Therapy Management (MTM) hub located within a Grand Rapids, MI. There will also be a longitudinal rotation at our
fast-growing community-based specialty pharmacy location located on the Grand Rapids MI Medical Mile.

Graduates of the program are trained to be leaders and managers in the pharmacy community and play an active role in
advancing community pharmacy practice beyond dispensing. The resident will be expected to achieve a level of proficiency to perform the duties of a community-based staff pharmacist and pharmacy manager with the future endeavor of
assisting with clinical initiatives of the district and region.

Residency Activities

The resident will participate in the provision of patient-care services through the following:
• Provide MTM and patient counselling across multiple patient populations in our unique MTM hub
• Development of health and wellness programs
• Deliver preventative health services and participate in off-site immunization clinics
• Provide services for patients taking specialty medications for solid organ transplant and inflammatory diseases
• Transition of care services through an internal medicine and ambulatory clinic on the Medical Mile
• Deliver chronic disease state management education and action plans
• Lead patient-center dispensing at local Walgreens
• Create partnerships to improve health equity and bring health care to patient who lack access

The resident will participate in the following activities that strengthen practice management and educator skills:
• Design and conduct a practice-based research project
• Present research findings at regional and national professional meetings
• Development of clinical pharmacy services and collaborative practice agreements
• An advanced academia experience through the College’s Pharmacy Education Development and Lecture Series
(PEDALS) for pharmacy residents
• Provide clinical instruction to student pharmacists at the College and pharmacy

Candidate Requirements

• Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited college or school of pharmacy
• Michigan pharmacist license within 90 days of the start of the residency program
• Complete the online resident position application 
• Submission of residency application materials to PhORCAS by January 15

• A letter of intent explaining why you are pursuing a community pharmacy residency and what you hope to gain from the residency program
