PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico
Postgraduate year one (PGY1) residency programs build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas,
goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient
care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
The primary practice site is the high-performing, patient-focused Walgreens Pharmacy in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The
resident will receive training on chronic diseases such as diabetes, or hypertension. The resident will gain insight to medication management, medication reconciliation, and educational and behavioral counseling. The resident sill also train at a community-based specialty pharmacy within a medical building. Pharmacists at this site work closely with an interdisciplinary healthcare team servicing roughly 1,000 patients a month to optimize clinical outcomes. Longitudinal learning experience offer the resident the opportunity to practice continuously throughout the year with focus in areas such as specialty pharmacy, medication and disease state management, routine and other immunizations and clinical practice management. Graduates are prepared for clinical and leadership positions in the community and specialty pharmacy setting and the community at large.
This residency is offered in partnership with Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy, Puerto Rico Campus
and will provide the resident the opportunity to develop academic skills by acting as a preceptor and educator and by
conducting research. In addition, the resident will actively participate in education of pharmacists, technicians, and
pharmacy students.
Residency Activities:
The resident will participate in the provision of patient care services through the following:
• Deliver disease state management including medication monitoring and follow up programs in Oncology, HIV/AIDS,
Hepatitis, Multiple, Sclerosis, Chronic Inflammatory Diseases, Cystic Fibrosis, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Parkinson’s disease
• Provide medication therapy management
• Develop health and wellness programs
• Deliver preventive health services including routine immunizations and offsites immunization clinics
• Deliver chronic disease state management education and action plans
• Lead patient-center dispensing at local Walgreens
The resident will participate in the following activities that will strengthen practice management/ leadership and teaching skills:
• Design and conduct practice-based research project
• Present research findings at appropriate regional and national professional meetings
• Execute marketing strategy for the promotion of patient care services
• Participate in NSU's Innovative Teaching and Learning In Clinical Sciences and Pharmacy

Candidate Requirements
• Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a college or school of pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education
• Puerto Rico pharmacist licensure within 120 days of the start of the residency program
• Complete the online resident position application
