PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program, San Francisco, California

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist
practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

This residency program prepares community pharmacists to become advanced practice leaders and provide patient centered care. This will be attained by the resident through advanced training at various exemplary specialty pharmacy settings.

The residency is based at a unique Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy at the UCSF Medical Center. This pharmacy offers
a variety of patient-centered services for complex diseases/conditions such as organ transplantation, HIV, oncology,
CID, Hepatitis C and other chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular disease where the pharmacists work closely with the UCSF healthcare providers as a team. This specialty location also
offers hospital bedside delivery for discharge medications, compounding, immunizations, educating and mentoring
pharmacy students. This program also includes experiences at Walgreens Specialty Clinic at Community, one HIV
centered and hazardous compounding location, district and corporate offices, and UCSF outpatient clinics to provide
additional patient care experience during each module.

Residency Activities

The resident will participate in the provision of patient-care services through the following:
• Collaborate with healthcare providers from UCSF Hospital and outpatient clinic facilities
• Enhance and manage current medication programs for complex disease states to improve patient adherence and health outcomes
• Provide Medication Therapy Management
• Patient medication counseling
• Provide discharge medications counseling for hospital bedside delivery
• Administer immunizations in a variety of settings
• Develop community outreach programs

The resident will participate in the following activities that will strengthen practice management/ leadership and teaching skills:
• Design and conduct practice-based research project
• Present research findings at appropriate regional and national professional meetings
• Develop business plan to promote pharmacy’s patient-care services
• Provide clinical instruction to pharmacy students

• Paid Time Off. Resident pharmacists accrue approximately 10 paid time off days during the program. The rate of accrual is based on the average hours worked and length of time in position.

Candidate Requirements

• Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited School/College of Pharmacy
• California pharmacist license within 90 days of the start of the residency program
• Complete the online resident position application
• Submission of all residency application materials no later than January 19th to PhORCAS

• Three letters of recommendation: One letter written by a pharmacist or pharmacy manager who has directly supervised the applicant.

• Face to face interview and presentation (upon invitation)
