Walgreens and the Sullivan University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program, Louisville, KY

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

This postgraduate training opportunity allows for pharmacists to enhance their skill set in the community and specialty pharmacy setting. The primary residency practice site is a community-based specialty pharmacy in Louisville, KY. The pharmacy team services patients with many disease states including oncology, transplant, chronic inflammatory diseases, HIV and HCV. The community pharmacists at this site work closely with providers, patients, and the community to provide optimal drug therapy for patients. Residents gain insights on management issues that can affect the implementation of patient care services in the community and specialty pharmacy settings.

The program is academically affiliated with Sullivan University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The resident will complete a teaching certificate program and will assist in teaching opportunities and precepting experiences for the Sullivan University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The residency program graduates will be leaders in the pharmacy community and will have an active role in advancing community pharmacy practice. A graduate from this residency program would be viewed to possess equivalent experience and skills to seek a pharmacy manager position within a specialty pharmacy location or a traditional community pharmacy practice site.
