Walgreens and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program, Chapel Hill and Asheville, NC

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

This program is operated by the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There are two site options – Asheville and Chapel Hill – each is close to a UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy campus. Walgreens residents will collaborate with each other, as well as network with other residents associated with sites in independent, supermarket, college health, public health department, or free and charitable pharmacy settings.

Community-based pharmacy residents will have a direct influence on patient outcomes through participation in patient-centered care, immunization services, health and wellness, and medication therapy management. Residents will develop collaboration with area providers and develop innovative clinical services for patients who are prescribed complex therapies. Residents will explore the development and evaluation of clinical services through completion of a research project and business plan. The resident will have an abundance of teaching opportunities. The program will prepare the resident to be an innovative clinical practitioner who can be a leader in the profession. The resident will have the skills, confidence, and experience to create change and advance patient care services in community-based (outpatient) settings.
