Walgreens PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency, Atlanta, GA

PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

This residency program to provide postgraduate training that enables residents to achieve their professional goals, become a leader within the profession, provide compassionate care for members of their communities and contribute to the Walgreen Company’s advancement in healthcare.

The residency program is based at the Walgreens health-system pharmacy located at Piedmont Hospital-Atlanta. This pharmacy location offers clinical pharmacy services for patients who are prescribed in complex therapies such as HIV/AIDS, oncology, chronic inflammatory disease, and transplant. The clinical pharmacists at this site work closely with medical staff to provide optimal drug therapy for patients. The residency program graduates will be leaders in the future of pharmacy and will have an active role in advancing community pharmacy practice.

Residency Activities

The resident will participate in the provision of patient care services through the following:
• Transitions of care and disease state management programs in areas such as HIV/AIDS, oncology, chronic inflammatory disease, pediatrics, transplant, Hepatitis C, immunologic disorders, and Limited Distribution Drug therapies
• Clinical management of specialty patients that includes; financial assistance, thorough disease-specific clinical counseling, and close communication with providers for optimal patient management
• Impact patient outcomes through participation in patient counseling, Medication Therapy Management, patient adherence, and immunization services
• Assist with transitions of care through bedside delivery of medications upon discharge
• Comprehensive patient care services with a particular focus on Diabetes Self-Management Education
• Meet with regional leadership to learn about management initiatives and issues that can affect the implementation of patient care services in the community pharmacy setting

The resident will participate in the following activities that strengthen practice management and educator skills:
• Develop and conduct a practice-based research project and present findings at regional and national professional meetings
• Design and execute collaborative practice, business plan, and quality improvement projects
• Instruct and precept APPE student pharmacists
• Complete a Teaching Certificate Program

• Paid Time Off-resident pharmacists accrue approximately 10 paid time off days during the program. The rate of accrual is based on the average hours worked and length of time in position.

Residency Requirements

• Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a college or school of pharmacy accredited by ACPE
• Georgia pharmacy intern license by June 1st and Georgia pharmacist license within 120 days of the start of the residency program
• Complete the online resident position application 
• Submission of all residency application materials to PhORCAS by the application deadline of January 15th
• Curriculum Vitae; Three professional letters of recommendation
• A letter of intent
• Official university transcripts
• On-site interview (upon invitation)
• Presentation at on-site interview on a topic related to community practice
• Registered with the National Matching Service (NMS)
